Organight

Organizing your body posture with smart device and application

At a glance

Arising from my observation that many of my friends are in the early stages of office syndrome, trying to improve their body posture, but still struggle to achieve it. From there, I developed a solution with the goal to solve this problem.

'Organight' aims to enable users to use mobile phones in a healthy way and have more control over their usage. The product consists of 3 main parts: (1) a motion tracker that detects body gestures, works with (2) a smart monitor to help provide reminders and create a sleeping atmosphere, and (3) an application to help track data and analyze usage.

Collaboration

Individual project, consulted with a doctor and a physiotherapist.

My role

User research, persona, user journey, theory research, product development, paper prototype, interface design

Duration

Identifying the problem

In recent years, mobile phone use has increased to 8.6%, while other devices have decreased. 87% of people use their phones before bedtime most often. Although half of people have tried controlling their play, 70% have failed.

Using a mobile phone causes direct harm to the body, primarily to the neck and eyes. These numbers of negative effects are consistently increasing as time goes on.

Problem statement

How might we design a healthy experience for people who are addicted to playing smartphones in bed?

Target persona

Understanding the user

After defining target persona, I interviewed over 20 people in this persona and summarized the common user journey which can be divided into 3 stages.

01 Before

Users have bad smartphone posture habits and don't realize it until they start feeling symptoms of office syndrome.

02 During

Eventually, users realize that this is not good and start to find solutions such as exercising, massaging, or buying new sitting mats.

03 After

Although some users found that their pain subside, most still find it difficult to change their habit even though they know it's the best way.

Theory research

To achieve user behavior change success, I intend to apply established theory so that the solution is not only human-centered but also grounded in principles that contribute to a correct behavior change.

Design requirements

Based on user needs and possible theories, I developed design requirements as a roadmap for the design process, outlining project goals and expectations.

Concept development

After finalized the requirements, I ideated 3 concept designs and tested with users to gather user feedback. After that, I revised the selected concept and further explored mood, tone, and the form of the product.

Final experience

01 Preparation

User starts by placing the device on the headboard

Then pick up the tracker out.

Attach the tracker to your phone on the upper side.

Download the application and sync with the device.

For personalized recommendations, choose his/her age range and what they want to improve

The previous data will also be used for goals suggestion, user can adjust them as needed.

02 Action

The home page displays a list of challenges related to a user's goals.

When user starts using the phone, eye distance, neck angle, and movement are tracked.

A warning light, sound, and emotion will be displayed if a user is in the wrong posture more than 2 minutes.

Warning emotion faces will be different according to the warning type.

The device emits ASMR sounds and light that help with sleep 15 minutes before the set bedtime.

Red light stimulates the production of melatonin, a sleep hormone, and turns off 2 hours after falling asleep.

03 Maintenance

User can reflect on the results, including comparing with other users and ideal goals.

Telling the risk of disease from usage behavior, as well as suggesting appropriate challenges to reduce risk.

If the user is in a good direction, the system will suggest other tips to make it even better.

There is also a reward to encourage short-term goals to be achieved continuously.

The challenge can be shared with others to make it more fun and challenging when doing with friends.

For those people unable to achieve their goals, the app will customize new goals to suit their use.
